Sujana still hopeful of getting special status
    04ONGPAGE6SUJAN_04_2497319f.jpg

Being an ally of the NDA government, we cannot mount pressure on the Centre, says Union Minister Y. Sujana Chowdary

The Telugu Desam Party is optimistic about convincing the BJP-led Central government for granting the special category status to the State notwithstanding Union Minister for Statistics and Programme Implementation Rao Inderjit Singh’s assertion that there is no question of grant of special category status to any State.

Union Minister of State for Science and Technology Y. Satyanarayana (Sujana) Chowdary said the TDP will continue to impress upon the Centre the need to confer the special status on Andhra Pradesh which was facing constraints on several counts, finances in particular, ever since bifurcation.

Mr. Rao Inderjit Singh’s claim that the Centre had agreed the recommendations of the 14{+t}{+h}Finance Commission in totality was not applicable to Andhra Pradesh as the State was bifurcated after the report was prepared, he said.

“Being an ally of the NDA government, we cannot mount pressure on the Centre. We will continue our efforts to convince the Centre to take Andhra Pradesh as a special case,” he said adding the TDP was hopeful of a positive decision on the issue soon. Mr. Chowdary was critical of the Congress which, he said, was bent upon to disrupt the proceedings of Parliament. This was evident from the fact that the Congress continued disrupting the proceedings in spite of the ruling party expressing its willingness to allow discussion on all the issues raised by the Opposition.

Though the Chair had granted permission for a debate on the special category status to Andhra Pradesh in Lok Sabha on Monday, the issue could not come up as the Congress disrupted the proceedings.

Jagan begins indefinite fast for Special Category Status (SCS)
    07GTPSJHI-W064-_08_2575802f.jpg

Naidu compromised with Centre on the issue, YSRC chief Y.S. Jagan says. The granting of SCS would enable AP to get more industries and investments. States like Himachal Pradesh are examples.
Launching a scathing attack on Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, YSR Congress president Y.S Jaganmohan Reddy said here on Wednesday that Mr. Chandrababu Naidu had not only reneged on his poll promises, but also had compromised with the Centre over the issue of granting of Special Category Status to Andhra Pradesh.

Mr. Reddy was addressing a gathering at the venue where he launched an indefinite fast demanding the Special Category Status. Party leaders were enthused by the impressive turn out from various parts of the State. This is the second time that Mr. Jagan had sat on a fast demanding SCS. Earlier in August, he sat on a three-day fast at Mangalagiri.

“Mr. Naidu had compromised with the Centre on this most important issue in return for a favour. Why is not pulling his Ministers out of NDA government? The reason behind his frequent trips to Delhi is that he is pleading with them to bail him out of Cash-for-Vote scandal. I assure you that this scam tainted government will not last long,’’ Mr. Jagan said.

He said SCS would put the State in a financially secure position. “The granting of SCS would enable AP to get more industries and investments. States like Himachal Pradesh have secured over Rs.30,000 crore as financial assistance and the industrial growth had been impressive at 130 per cent and there has been over 400 per cent increase in jobs,’’ he said.

Mr. Reddy sought to turn the tables on the TDP government by alleging that the government had been mired in corruption in awarding tenders to Pattiseema project, a project which has not been completed and giving licences to liquor shops.

He also alleged that the Chief Minister had reneged on all poll promises including a job for every family, unconditional waiver of farm loans and SHG loans.

Senior party leaders Botcha Satyanarayana and Ummareddy Venkateswarlu, Marri Rajasekhar, and MLAs were present.

    Filmy touch

Actor and MLA R.K. Roja added a filmy touch to her speech by alluding to characters in the recent film ‘Bahubali’. Her speech was cheered by party supporters. Comparing Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu to Bhallaladeva, violent character in the movie and Jagan to Bahubali, who wins the people’s hearts with his generosity, Ms. Roja said Mr. Jagan would ultimately prevail over Mr. Naidu.

A.P. Special Status issue pending with Niti Ayog: Venkaiah Naidu
    VENKAIAH_NAIDU_2578105f.jpg

Niti Ayog is considering the issue of conferring special category status on Andhra Pradesh and it was not fair on part of some political parties to make undue criticism on the subject, Union Minister for Urban Development M. Venkaiah Naidu said on Friday.

Speaking to media persons here, Mr. Naidu said that he personally met Niti Ayog members and outlined the circumstances of Andhra Pradesh and the issue was under consideration. “The union government is aware of its responsibilities and will fulfil all its promises,” he quipped.

Those who did nothing when in power were making a lot of noise on the issue now, charged Mr. Naidu and quipped, “after losing power and coming into the Opposition, they seem to remember it”. Special status does benefit a state but it does not solve all the problems. “Eleven states have the status but they still continue to seek assistance,” the Union Minister said.

    AMRUT Cities
Mr. Naidu said Sidddipet in Telangana and Srikalahasti and Kavali in Andhra Pradesh have been nominated for Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT) cities. Cities that won nomination as Smart Cities would be submitting their detailed project reports by December 15, based on which 20 cities would be selected for the first year, he added.

Only special package will not suffice: Subba Reddy
The YSR Congress will not rest till the Centre fulfils its promise made on the floor of Parliament to accord special category status at the time of bifurcation, YSRC Whip in Parliament Y.V. Subba Reddy has said.

Addressing the YSRC leaders who launched a relay-fast here on Thursday, Mr. Subba Reddy said that the Centre was trying to "mislead the people of the State saying that its immediate priority was to sanction ‘special projects to Andhra Pradesh rather than the special category status (SCS).

The status alone could reap a long-term benefit to the State.

Jagan Mohan Reddy’s indefinite fast foiled
    YSJAGAN_2582869g.jpg

The YSRC Party president was shifted to the trauma care centre at the Government General Hospital in Guntur in the early hours of Tuesday.
Guntur Police forcibly foiled the indefinite fast undertaken by Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy and shifted him to the trauma care centre at the Government General Hospital in the early hours of Tuesday.

A team led by Additional Superintendent of Police J. Bhaskara Rao reached the venue at about 4 a.m. and swiftly moved Mr. Jagan amidst slogan shouting supporters resisting the move.

Mr. Jagan, who has been on an indefinite fast for the last six days seeking special category status for Andhra Pradesh, was sleeping in the make-shift tent when a posse of police personnel reached the venue.

Mr. Jagan’s wife Bharathi, his sister Sharmila and mother Y.S. Vijayamma were beside him at the GGH.

GGH Superintendent Raju Naidu said that Mr.Jagan’s health was showing signs of improvement after he was administered fluids. Medical reports on Tuesday suggested that the ketone had reached an abnormal level, which could have led to renal failure.

Special status to A.P.: PCC chief writes to 700 MPs
The Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) has written to nearly 700 MPs about Special Category Status and other assurances mentioned in the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act – 2014 appealing to them to intervene.

Addressing a press conference here on Monday, Pradesh Congress Committee president N. Raghuveera Reddy said he wrote a letter to bring to the notice of the MPs the “wishes of five crore people of Andhra Pradesh with regard to the implementation of the Special Category Status and other promises made to Andhra Pradesh in Parliament on February 20, 2014.”

He said in the letter he mentioned that during bifurcation of the state of the erstwhile Andhra Pradesh, the then Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had given certain commitments to the residuary state of A.P. on behalf of the Government of India.

The promises and the commitments made in the Parliament were unanimously accepted by all the political parties and the then leaders of Opposition in Rajya Sabha, M. Venkaiah Naidu and Arun Jaitley.

    UPA decision
The UPA government took the decision and also directed the Planning Commission to implement the decision to grant Special Category Status to A.P.

Even the NDA at the time of elections assured in their election manifesto that they would implement all the promises made in the Parliament. But unfortunately, after forming the government, they were not implementing any of the assurances or promises.

“Therefore we request your intervention on the above said promises during this budget session,” says the letter.

“State’s development possible only with tag”
Demanding that the Special Category Status (SCS) be accorded to the State without fail, speakers at a roundtable organised here on Friday said that overall development of the State was possible only with the SCS. It was presided over by B. Aseervadam, convener of the Joint Action Committee of employees, workers and teachers.

DCC president Kandula Durgesh and district president of the YSRC K. Kanna Babu lambasted the BJP-led NDA government on the issue and accused the TDP of failing to protect the interests of the State.

Chairman of the Cocanada Chamber of Commerce Dantu Surya Rao said that the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act was not clear on the SCS and that was the reason why the Centre remained non-committal over the issue.

BJP district president Y. Malakondaiah, secretary of the CPI district unit T. Madhu were among those present.
