Krishna fete: Vijayawada to get power boost
VIJAYAWADA: In view of the upcoming Krishna Pushkaralu in August 2016, the electricity department is setting up two sub-stations and installing 300 transformers at various places in the city .
Keeping in view the increased power consumption during the 12-day-long festival, the electricity board officials have planned setting up of two substations with a capacity of 132 KV in Moghalrajpuram and Bhavanipuram.
CMD of southern power distribution company H.Y. Dora inspected all ghats on Saturday. Mr Dora later directed the officials concerned to submit the Detailed Project Report (DPR) on the two substations, 300 transformers and new lights to be installed in Vijayawada and Gun-tur, before August 15. APSPDCL Vijayawada zone chief engineer Raja Bapayya said DPR will be completed soon.
â€œWe are supposed to construct two sub-stations with a capacity of 132 KV in Moghalar-ajpuram and Bhavani-puram in the city along with 300 new transformers to reduce the power droppings in Vijayawada.â€ â€œAdditionally, 14,000 new lights will be installed in Vijaya-wada and Guntur,â€ said Mr Bapayya.

Gopichand likely to set up badminton academy in Vijayawada
National chief badminton coach Pullela Gopichand is contemplating starting a badminton academy in Vijayawada and he is working out the modalities, according to Badminton Association of India secretary (events) and Andhra Pradesh Badminton Association secretary K. Ch. Punnaiah Chowdary here on Monday.
Speaking to The Hindu as chief guest from the sidelines of the Krishna University inter-collegiate badminton tournament at P. B. Siddhartha Arts and Science College, he hailed the announcement of Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu allotting Rs. 96 crores for the development of Vijayawada and said the time was appropriate to revamp the DRRMC Indoor Stadium to suit the modern needs of the sporting fraternity of the city, which is all set to help build the new capital city at Amaravati.
â€œThe government had allotted Rs 1.5 crore for the renovation of the indoor stadium when we staged the Senior National badminton championship early this year. So far the corporation has submitted bills for Rs. 80 lakhs worth works completed. The government should release the balance amount for the repairs works. The roof is leaking and the drainage needs upgradation. We also need air-conditioning to host premier tournaments,â€ he added.
He said Siddhartha institutions were the breeding place for international shuttlers.
